Ahh yes... the doors! The wall in the garage
was originally constructed for the Drive Shaft show to separate
the two teams. When Monster Garage moved in, I suggested we have
some doors cut in for the drive on to the ramp. They said the
outside doors were fine and not to sweat it. Well, after a few
months they changed their minds and cut a hole in the wall and
filled it with a single 9' X 10' door made out of 2X4s, covered
with corrugated sheet, and a gate wheel on the bottom so it wouldn’t
scrape the floor. I wasn’t thrilled.
They gave me two weeks to do something about it. After episode
51, the “All Girl Build”, we had a down week so that's
when I started. After ripping out the old door, I put up a 2X4
steel “beam” we had laying around for a header, and
constructed two frames out of 1”X1” steel tubing,
and then hung them on six extra heavy bullet hinges. I had to
quit for the next builds (episode 52, Open-Road Racer, and episode
53, Belly Tank Lakester), so I hung the corrugated sheets on it
and left.
The next down week was right before The Ultimate Surfmobile, (episode
54), so I got to hang out a little with very cool and old school
board shaper Jay Hodges while I finished the Monster Doors. Jay
was prepping the surfboard shack he would use to shape the boards
Jesse would ride for the challenge, and I was bracing the doors
and trying to figure out how I would finish them. Then I had a
brilliant and original idea: I'll finish it with wrenches, flames
and a skull! |
